In the Department of Art and Art History at Bridgewater State University, we explore art forms across a diversity of perspectives and disciplines, challenging our students to delve into the history, analysis and creation of evocative artwork. Students gain an immersive education through direct experiences with dedicated faculty and thought-provoking visiting artists and scholars, and further enhance their classroom learning with visits to museums, galleries and art studios in Boston, Providence and New York.
Our faculty members are professional artists representing a range of international backgrounds and disciplines, and they produce distinguished research, publications, exhibits and artwork. Impassioned and driven, they closely advise and mentor students to help them develop their creative interests and cultivate their skills. Faculty members also work with students to find opportunities in a wide range of artistic pursuits and careers.
Students have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in our well-equipped studios and design facilities, as well as through fulfilling internships, exciting research opportunities, and international study tours. BSU graduates go on to contribute to the cultural richness and artistic vitality of Southeastern Massachusetts and beyond, entering successful careers in areas that include art, design, art preservation, art history and art education.
We offer two undergraduate degrees: Global Perspectives in Art History (BA) and Studio Art (BA) – which includes a range of concentrations to fit students’ interests – and a graduate-level program in Creative Arts (MAT). We also offer a minor in graphic design, art history minor, and studio art minor. The Department of Art and Art History is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).
